Black History, Black Futures: Why Mid-Career Pros Must Seize This Moment
The future belongs to the builders, not the destroyers.
I’ve spoken with quite a few young people lately who are shocked to the point of paralysis at the amount of racism, sexism, and outright inhumanity being expressed openly and out loud in our country recently.
They weren’t raised in this kind of environment. They believed the “all that’s in the past” lies they were told their whole lives. This reality makes no sense to them, and they have no idea how to respond.
But those of us who are over 40ish, who were alive when the Ronald Reagan “give all the money to the rich and they’ll take care of everybody else” trickle-down con job took hold, well, we remember what this country was like before the racially insensitive American went briefly out of style, and into temporary hiding.
We always knew it would be temporary. And we always knew that any progress we made would be met with ferocious backlash. And 57 years after the death of Dr. King, they just can’t fake it any more.
So, what does that mean for us? Where do we go from here?
We’ve always been faced with two paths to progress; education being the way in, and entrepreneurship being the way up. When we first entered the work force, a typical job interview might involve such questions as, “What family do you come from?” “What part of town do you live in?” or “Do you know anyone who works for this company already?”
These were the still-legal ways to discriminate, to weed out anyone who might be regarded as undesirable, or “not the right fit.”
The country was neatly divided into three classes: those with money (top), those with education and in-demand skills (middle), and those with only their labor (lower).
But today, things are different. In a high tech age, the computers and robotics have enabled the upper sector, gutted the middle sector, and nearly eliminated the need for the bottom sector. A typical job interview today might only contain one question that matters: how are your computer skills?
This doesn’t mean everyone should try to become a programmer. In fact, that’s more and more risky in the age of AI. But it does mean you should use your education to take control of your career by becoming more entrepreneurial. Open your mind to the business and marketing side of computing, and join with others who are thinking the same way.
Many of us already have side hustles out of necessity, but the time has come to think bigger.
Instead of just looking for another job, we should be thinking of how we can create jobs for others. A service-based economy will never lift us as a whole, simply because there’s a huge surplus of service workers and they are too easily replaceable.
We are fighting a three-headed dragon. To keep control, the enemy wants us to:
1) Forget our past sufferings and achievements (guilt)
2) Stay blind to, and distracted from, our current opportunities (hate)
3) Miss our chance to truly rise economically (fear).
As you can see, each failure trap is the result of a spiritual weakness on their part. We are the strong ones, the survivors, the best of the best. A lifetime on the front lines has made us battle-hardened, resourceful, and resilient. They know it; the only question is whether we we know it ourselves.
Their “deal with the devil” has held for over 2,000 years – and the payment is coming due. We already know who wins in the end. There is no need to fret over events in the 3rd or 4th quarter.
Let them continue to delude themselves with desperate dreams of imagined superiority; we already know whose we are.
And in that spirit, I’d like to serve as a bridge that helps get you from where you are to where you want to be.
